COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Matteson Township man whose home burned down on Sunday morning was arraigned the day before in Branch County District Court on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and malicious destruction of a building.
42-year-old Jonathan Vern Fleming is also accused of being a second time habitual offender.
He was booked at the Branch County Jail last Friday in connection with an alleged incident on January 15.
According to court documents, he was accused of throwing a rock through a neighbor’s front door window. The rock barely missed hitting a man inside who had ducked but it did cause about $1,200 worth of damage.
A warrant for Fleming’s arrest was issued last Wednesday.
The fire at Fleming’s home on Lyter Road broke out just before 4:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Bronson Fire Chief Scott Wilber reported a neighbor noticed the fire which had been burning for some time. Fire crews arrived to find the mobile home fully engulfed in flames and partially collapsed from fire damage. No one was home at the time of the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but it is not considered suspicious. Damage was estimated at $15,000.
It’s not known if the rock throwing incident and the fire are related.
