COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Downtown Development Authority took a couple of steps on Wednesday that they hope will lead to the development of the former Taylor’s Stationers building at 60 West Chicago.
They approved a $4,000 request for architectural work. Current plans call for the second and third floors to be laid out for residential use with the bottom floor being used for retail businesses. Options for basement use would also be looked at.
Lisa Miller from the Branch County Economic Growth Alliance said she has already gotten a pair of quotes and there may be a third one.
Miller was confidant this is the kind of project that would fit the building.
The D.D.A. also approved a nearly $5,400 request to repair the building’s fire suppression system. An inspection was conducted recently and City building technician Chad Rakocy said there was a potentially devastating problem with a control valve.
The work would include five-year inspections and tests. There would also be a replacement and repairing of specific sprinklers and valves along with signage. The three-story building was bought by the D.D.A. in late 2019 in hopes of encouraging downtown development.
It has been empty since the spring of 2016 when Taylor’s Stationers owners Howard and Lola Taylor retired.
