STEUBEN COUNTY, IN (WTVB) – A man from Jasper County, Indiana was booked at the Steuben County jail on eight charges after he allegedly led police on a lengthy vehicle pursuit Monday afternoon in Steuben County.
The Indiana State Police say the incident began at approximately 1:30 p.m. near the I-69 and State Road 120 interchange after a Trooper identified a black GMC Sierra pickup truck displaying a stolen license plate.
Troopers made a traffic stop on the vehicle but before they could identify the man behind the wheel, he sped off.
A vehicle pursuit followed which would eventually run through central Steuben County for nearly a half hour.
The suspect vehicle is said to have run off the road several times through fields and wooded areas around Crooked Lake.
It crashed through a fence, ran over a mailbox and nearly struck a State Police Trooper.
Deputies from the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department were able to join in the pursuit at various locations to assist with apprehending the driver.
Stop sticks were deployed at several different locations, but the driver managed to avoid each attempt. Stop sticks deployed on County Road 600 West north of U.S. 20 finally deflated the truck tires. The driver continued driving on flat tires for a short distance, but eventually his vehicle became inoperable.
The driver, identified as 57-year-old Mark Allen Cates was taken into custody without further incident.
