TEKONSHA, MI (WTVB) – Due to COVID-19 related issues, Tekonsha Community Schools will be closed through next Friday, March 19.
Instruction will be virtual during that time. Superintendent Jeff Kawaski says school will resume with face to face instruction on Monday, March 22.
The school offices will be open Friday from 7:30 am until 3:30 pm for students that need to pick up chromebooks or textbooks.
There will be no games or practices for athletics through March 19.
Kawaski said in his post on the district’s Facebook page that closing school was based on information and direction from the Calhoun County Public Health Department and the health and safety of all involved.
He went on to say, “We also understand that this makes things difficult for many parents and families. Please keep in mind that our school has no control over Covid 19. Nor do we have any control over how long students that test positive must be out of school or how long students must be quarantined. This is determined by the Health Department.”
Meanwhile, Coldwater High School only will be going back to their Red and White Hybrid model from this Monday, March 15 through to Spring Break. High School Principal Bill Milnes says this is due to the recent increase in the number of students who have needed to be quarantined as close contacts.
He says this change only impacts the high school students and classes. This does not impact any other school in the district and it does not impact the Branch Area Careers Center.
Milnes says over the past seven days, they have seen an increase in the number of students who are staying home due to illness and they have had a recent significant increase in the total number of students at Coldwater High School that have had to be quarantined due to being a close contact to a COVID-19 positive person.
This trend has not currently been seen in the other buildings in the Coldwater school district.
