BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – Bronson Fire Chief Scott Wilber says his department has had a busy start to the month of March with call volume twice that of normal.
Spring-like temperatures combined windy conditions led to an early start to grass and field fires. Historically, they start in April and continue into the first part of May.
Wilber says, “We have already responded to nine grass fires this month, which is more than a normal amount for a typical spring altogether.”
There have also been 13 medical responses in the first half of March and Bronson firefighters have also had to respond to four motor vehicle crashes in the past two weeks..
The most serious took place just before midnight Friday night when an SUV left M-86 and struck a barn.
Bronson Fire personnel rendered medical aid, set up a helicopter landing zone for West Michigan AirCare, and diverted traffic.
The department was dispatched on Sunday afternoon to provide mutual aid to the Orland, Indiana Fire Department at the Walden Woods campground where sixteen campers and several sheds were destroyed. Bronson provided a tanker and an engine on that response.
Other calls for March include two carbon monoxide responses, one vehicle fire, and one rescue to lift a lawnmower off a patient.
Wilber says B.F.D. has responded to 31 emergency calls in the first half of March.
