BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The National Weather Service says some much needed rain is expected to move into the area over the next couple of days.
That is welcomed news for weary Branch County firefighters who have been battling a large amount of grass and field fires in recent weeks.
The grass fires started earlier than normal this month thanks to a lack of snow this winter, unseasonably warm temperatures and very dry weather.
There has been no measurable rainfall at the M.S.U. Extension Service weather station at the Bloom Dairy Farm since February 27.
The latest report from the United States Drought Monitor shows conditions are abnormally dry in Branch, Hillsdale, St. Joseph Counties and most of Calhoun County while moderate drought conditions were reported in the extreme southeast part of Michigan.
National Weather Service forecasters say a storm system will bring widespread rain to the area from Wednesday night through early Thursday evening.
Some in southern Lower Michigan may get as much as a half inch to one inch of rain.
In addition, northeast winds will strengthen with the strongest winds expected late Wednesday night and Thursday.
Northeast winds may gust as high as 30 to 40 mph. Rain is expected to taper off early Thursday evening with colder conditions settling in as skies clear.
