COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – While the new Lakeland fourth and fifth grade building is ready to open on Western Avenue in Coldwater on April 12, the Coldwater Community School Board of Education is scheduled Monday night to approve a bid for the demolition of the former Franklin Learning Center at 95 South Fremont Street.
The building has not been used for years and has become dilapidated.
The City of Coldwater Planning Commission approved a conditional rezoning of the nine-and-a-quarter acres of land in August of 2019 for a proposed senior independent living project.
MVAH Partners of Butler County, Ohio and Coldwater Community Schools sought the conditional rezoning from A-1 One Family Residential to A-3 Multi Family Residential.
City Planner Dean Walrack said at the time that MVAH has a purchase option on the site and authorization from the property owner to seek the rezoning. Among the conditions was that construction would have to start by June 30th, 2021.
The rezoning request was also contingent on the awarding of MSHDA tax credits.
MVAH said the proposed development would include up to 48 senior independent living units restricted to those 55 years old and over.
