UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – After serving as the Union City Fire Chief for the last 22 years, Dave Hughes has announced he will be stepping down from that role on May 1 but he intends to stay with the department.
He is only the fourth Fire Chief that the village has had since 1928.
The opening for Union City Fire Chief has been posted by the village. Previously the department has been led by Art Merchant (1928-1975), Robert Merchant (1975-1999) and David Hughes (1999-2021).
According to a post on the Village’s Facebook page, the only other known Fire Chief before 1928 was Victor D. Ockerman, a blacksmith who had a business on East High Street.
He served before Merchant who then served as Fire Chief for 47 years. The Union City fire department building is dedicated to Merchant.
If you have any questions about the opening, call the Village Office at (517) 741-8591 during business hours.
