STURGIS, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals will get a chance to play for a district championship on Saturday night, something that was denied them last year due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Cardinals survived and advanced on Thursday night in the MHSAA Boys Basketball Division One district semifinals at Sturgis as they had to go into overtime to defeat the host Trojans 73-69.
The game between the old Twin Valley Conference rivals was hard fought and close all night long.
Sturgis led 29-28 at halftime but Coldwater came back in the third to take a 47-45 lead. Regulation ended in a 61-61 tie before Coldwater outscored Sturgis 12-8 in the extra period.
Ethan Crabtree and Brandon Downs both scored 21 points for the Cardinals. Crabtree and Evan Sloan both had double-doubles. Crabtree grabbed 10 rebounds while Sloan had 19 points and 10 boards. Spencer Rodesiler had four assists while Lu LeBron had four steals.
Thomas Kurowski scored a game-high 26 points for Sturgis while Brayden Webb had 25 points for the Trojans who finished their season at 6-5.
The Cardinals will take a 12-4 record into Saturday’s district title game against Battle Creek Central after the 3-9 Bearcats defeated Gull Lake 48-43 in the second semifinal.
