ALGANSEE TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – A wood stove is believed to have started a Monday morning fire which destroyed a 1,500 square foot barn on Colvin Road south of Warren Road.
Quincy firefighters were initially dispatched at 7:40 a.m.. They got automatic mutual aid from Coldwater. Tankers were then requested from Lakeland and crews from the Fremont, Indiana were called in to help with a draft site for water.
The structure on an Amish farm was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived. They were able to save two nearby buildings including a residence which was only 10 feet away from the burning barn.
The fire was called out just before 8:30 a.m. and crews were on the scene until about 10:00 a.m..
First reports indicated the barn stored buggies inside. A dollar figure on the damage was not available. No injuries were reported.
Monday’s fire along with other recent blazes are considered non-suspicious but it has not stopped some people from taking to social media and spreading false rumors the fires are being deliberately set.
Quincy Fire Chief Mike Sherman says all of these fires have been investigated and have been proven to be accidental in nature. He says the significant rise in fires is certainly alarming but none have been suspicious to date.
The only recent fire determined to be deliberately set took place in the City of Coldwater on March 18 in the 200 block of South Jefferson.
