Jerry L. Downer, 87, of Coldwater, passed away Friday, March 26, 2021 at Maple Lawn. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at 1:00 PM at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Coldwater with Rev. Kim Cole officiating. A private family graveside service will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Quincy at a later date. Cremation services are being provided by Dutcher Funeral Home.
Jerry was born December 3, 1933 in Quincy, MI to Mahlon & Arlene (Barlow) Downer. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. Jerry married Dolores Hilliar, she preceded him in death. He later married Peggy (Ragon) LaMee on May 29, 2005. She preceded him in death on May 7, 2018.
Mr. Downer had worked at the former Shaw Shoe factory for many years and had also owned the local Jer-Dees pet shop, both in Coldwater. He more recently had driven the Bata bus.
Mr. Downer was a man of great faith, belonging to the Church of the Holy Spirit. He was a skilled woodworker and carpenter and enjoyed many years of bowling on a league and collecting antiques and coins. He was a good husband and father, a very giving person.
Jerry is survived by his daughter-in-law Shelly Downer of Coldwater, his brother Raymond Downer of Pekin, IL and many grand and great grandchildren. In addition to both wives, he was preceded in death by his children Steve Downer, Patty Downer and Julie Tilton; his siblings Emily Carroll, Patricia Downer and Loren Downer.
Memorials may be directed to St. Jude’s or the Church of the Holy Spirit.
