COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Statistics from the State of Michigan show that as of last Friday, nearly a third of the inmate population at the Lakeland Correctional Facility are refusing to be vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus.
Out of the 1,414 inmate population, the state says 546 have refused the vaccine.
There have been 915 inmates who have been given the first shot while 810 inmates have gotten both doses which means 57 percent of the Lakeland population is fully vaccinated.
Of the nearly 33,000 inmates in the Michigan Department of Corrections, over 8,500 have refused to be vaccinated. Statistics also show that 25 percent of the prison population have been fully vaccinated while 36 percent have gotten at least one dose.
A total of 24 prisoners who were originally housed at Lakeland have died out of the 839 who tested positive for the virus. The last death was reported on December 7. The state also says there were 104 positive cases among Lakeland staff members.
