GIRARD TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – A 17-year-old from Battle Creek and a nine month old child were injured Monday morning when a mini van they were in and a semi collided on northbound I-69 south of Herricksville Road.
The crash was reported at 8:53 a.m. and forced a shutdown of the northbound side of the interstate.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Department reports 31-year-old Samantha Smith of Battle Creek was driving the van which contained five passengers. Deputies say the van approached a northbound semi and made an abrupt left turn to avoid hitting the semi.
It then lost control on the left side of the road and did a 180 degree spin before it hit the rear wheels of the semi. The van wound up in the median.
The Sheriff’s Department says the two injured persons were not properly seat belted in and were ejected through a rear window. The nine month old was reported to be in a car seat.
The Sheriff’s Department reports both were taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne was which contrary to earlier reports they were taken to Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.
The Coldwater Fire Department, Lifecare Ambulance and the Michigan State Police provided assistance at the scene.
