COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Friday will be the final day the Coldwater Family Fare grocery store at 410 North Marshall will be open.
The closing of the store was announced just over a month ago and caught some people by surprise.
The property was sold in February to Gates Family Real Estate Holdings which is operated by Coldwater native Rick Gates according to a deed that was registered with the Branch County Register of Deeds office.
The property is currently zoned C-1 Community Business District. Although there has been much speculation about the future of the property on various social media platforms, no concrete plans have been officially announced.
SpartanNash had been in Coldwater for over 60 years. The store was a Felpausch before it became a Family Fare store in 2007.
The store’s pharmacy closed last month and there have been reduced hours in recent weeks. Most of the shelves were cleared on Thursday while other items were packed up and ready to be shipped out.
SpartanNash said in a statement released after it was learned the store was closing, “This closure is a business decision based on our continuous evaluation of our retail footprint and what is best for our more than 150 corporate-owned stores, our associates and the communities we serve. While it is never an easy decision to close a store, this is not a reflection on our dedicated associates or their commitment to serving our customers. In fact, we are working with our 37 store associates to find employment at our surrounding Family Fare stores in Marshall and Albion.”
According to the company’s web site, SpartanNash currently operates more than 150 corporate-owned grocery stores in nine states, and distributes to more than 2,100 independent locations throughout the country.
Their primary retail banners include Family Fare, Martin’s Super Markets, D&W Fresh Market, VG’s Grocery and Dan’s Supermarket.
