UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – One of Branch County’s Memorial Day traditions will return this year after being cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The annual Union City Memorial Day Parade will be held next Monday morning starting at 10:30 a.m..
The parade is one of the largest ones in the area as it starts at the Union City High School parking lot and travels through the downtown area before it ends at Riverside Cemetery.
It’s put on every year by the Village of Union City and the Union City Chamber of Commerce.
A bike decorating contest will be held at the parking lot across from the library before the start of the parade.
This year’s Grand Marshal is American Legion Post 196, Sargent of Arms, Wayne Briggs. Briggs is a Marine Veteran who volunteers countless hours in service to the Union City community.
The American Legion Post 196 invites all Veterans to join them on the Veteran’s wagon for the parade and cemetery service.
The parade will pause at the North Broadway Bridge for a service to honor fallen Navy and Coast Guard members as well as place a wreath at Veterans Memorial Park. The Legion will be present at Riverside Cemetery for a flag raising and ceremony service following the parade.
The parade will also pause at the Civil War Memorial near the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
To secure a spot in the line-up or if you have any questions, contact parade chair Donna Claar at 269-317-7723 or unioncitymi@gmail.com.
