OTSEGO, MI (WTVB) – The 2020-21 high school sports season is officially over for Branch County schools following the elimination of both Coldwater and Quincy in the Regional round of the Michigan High School Athletic Association softball tournament Saturday afternoon.
In Division 2 at Otsego, the Lady Cards couldn’t overcome an early 2-0 deficit as Wayland picked up a 3-1 win in the first Regional Semifinal. In her final game in a Coldwater uniform, senior Mia Rzepka smacked a solo homer over the left field fence in the sixth inning for the Cardinals’ only run of the game. She also added a single and a double, while Brooklyn Kerry had a pair of hits and Rylee Rice had a single. Alexis Bils took the hard-luck loss for Coldwater, whose season ends at 20-18.
Wayland would go on to beat Edwardsburg 3-1 in the Regional Final. Edwardsburg advanced by handing third-ranked Stevensville Lakeshore just their second loss of the season, shocking the Lancers 6-1 in the other Regional Semifinal game.
Meanwhile, in Division 3 at Michigan Center, Leslie shut out Quincy 7-0 in the second Regional Semifinal game. The Orioles could only muster two hits off Leslie pitcher Ada Bradford; Cemara Paul and Brailee Wood each had a single as Quincy closed its season with a 21-14 record. The Blackhawks would lose 2-1 to fourth-ranked Clinton in the Regional Final.
