BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Another round of severe storms battered the area on Saturday night as a pair of tornado warnings were issued in Calhoun County.
A severe thunderstorm nine miles south of Climax prompted the first warning at about 5:30 p.m..
The second warning was issued at 6:10 p.m. as National Weather Service radar indicated rotation in a line of severe thunderstorm that stretched from near Eaton Rapids to five miles southeast of Marshall.
Funnel clouds were reported in Cass County.
There were numerous reports of downed power lines in Three Rivers, Constantine and Fabius Park.
Trees were knocked down across Burlington Road in Calhoun County’s Newton Township.
The storms knocked out power for the second time within a week. As of late Sunday morning, 165 Consumers Energy customers were without power in Branch County while 738 customers were out in Calhoun County,
Branch County was under a tornado watch until 10:00 p.m. on Saturday but no severe weather was reported.
The storms also dumped more rain on an already saturated area. According to the rainfall measurements at the M.S.U. Extension Service weather station at the Bloom Dairy Farm, there has been more rain in the last week than for all of April and May combined.
That location measured 0.64 inches on Saturday and another half inch on Sunday. It has rained there nine out of the last 10 days.
June’s rainfall total is now 4.72 inches with 5.84 inches measured since May 25.
Calhoun County remains under a flood warning until Monday afternoon due to significant runoff from the weekend’s heavy rain.
