BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – The City of Bronson will soon be undertaking a project to replace all the city’s water meters.
According to City Manager Brandon Mersman, the current water meters that are in use have reached the end of their useful life after over 10 years of being in service. He says meters and replacement parts are no longer available and several meters have stopped working requiring them to estimate those bills.
Replacing all meters at once would just over $276,000, so the City Council Monday night voted to purchase half of the meters at this time for a total cost of $160,862.96. Mersman says the phase one cost is significantly more because it includes all of the larger meters and all of the startup costs and licensing costs.
The city will purchase the other half of the residential meters, totaling $115,659.50, during the next budget year or when the city receives its payment from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) local stimulus fund. There is $100,000 budgeted in the capital improvement fund for the current budget year and next budget year. The ARPA funds will allow the City to be able to fund most of this project without using those capital improvement funds.
There will be a yearly cost of $1,935.84 for the remote read subscription or $.07 per meter, per month.
The new meters will be installed first along with service lines during the Ruggles/Compton Street project.
