UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Voters in Union and Sherwood Townships as well as a small area of Burlington Township in Calhoun County will be deciding millage renewals for operating and sinking funds on Tuesday for the Union City Community School district.
The sinking fund proposal would allow the school district to continue levying the building and site sinking fund millage that expires with the 2021 tax levy. The vote is for three mills over 10 years between 2022 and 2031, Voters originally approved 3.5 mills in 2015.
Union City school officials say a few of the items that could be addressed with sinking millage funds include the replacement of the aging middle school boiler.
They are also looking at resurfacing the high school parking lots and replacing the bleachers at Alumni Field.
Officials point out a typical home with a value of $150,000 and a state equalized value of $70,000 would pay $210 per year under this renewal which would be a decrease from $245 per year previously.
Voters will also be asked to approve the renewal of the currently authorized millage rate of just over 17.7 mills for 10 years from 2022 to 2031.
It’s the estimated the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and 17.7252 mills are levied in 2022 is just under $847,000.
Polls in Union and Sherwood Township will be open on Tuesday from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m..
