COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – While many Coldwater Board of Public Utilities customers who lost power in Thursday morning’s storm got electricity back later in the day, it will be an extended outage for about 800.
The severe thunderstorm that swept through Branch County brought heavy rain and high wind gusts from 60 to 80 mph. CBPU officials say Coldwater was hit hard by the storm, leaving the community with severe thunderstorm damage.
Downed trees, limbs, and poles caused power outages to roughly 1,625 Coldwater Board of Public Utilities’ customers.
Unfortunately, extensive damage to utility poles and power lines will result in extended outage times for roughly 800 CBPU customers in areas hit the hardest by the storm.
The estimated restoration time for customers who are currently without power is Saturday, August 14.
Customers currently without power may have their power restored sooner, but in areas with severe damage like North Union City Road and Ebyview Subdivision, officials say plan for the full extended outage time.
These outages are limited in scope and do not affect the majority of the CBPU’s customer base. Additionally, mutual Aid from Bryan, Ohio, Napoleon, Ohio, Bowling Green, Ohio, and Marshall, Michigan, has been made and secured.
The CBPU reminds its customers to avoid downed power lines and advises against using a generator inside an attached garage, basement, or enclosed area.
To report a service outage, call (517) 279-9531. For any other emergency, call 911.
