COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A request from Birds of a Feather, LLC for an 85 foot sign height variance was turned down by the Coldwater Zoning Board of Appeals on Wednesday night.
The owners of the Tree House Provisioning Center at 894 East Chicago were hoping to install freestanding signage at a height of 100 feet.
The petitioners stated their location is not only completely land locked, but it is entirely surrounded by trees that are as tall as 85 feet and they have no ability to advertise at the head of the driveway located off of U.S. 12 where their easement begins. Therefore, they believe that the proposed signage was their only option.
The Coldwater Zoning Code limits freestanding sign height to 15 feet. The Tree House Provisioning Center property has no street frontage on any road and is accessed by an ingress/egress easement at the nearby Phoenix Building.
Board member Gordon Swan felt the variance request did not meet proper criteria.
The Coldwater Planning Commission made a unanimous recommendation to the Z.B.A. on Monday to turn down the variance request.
Our sign ordinance is only surpassed in it’s ridiculousness by this request. Go get a store front.
