MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) — The K-Mart store in Marshall, the last one in the entire state, is set to close for good in a couple of months as an era in shopping is coming to a close.
The store on Michigan Avenue just east of I-69 will likely close sometime in November. A specific date has not been given.
The first store opened in Garden City 60 year ago. At one time, there were over 2,300 locations across the country and was a popular destination for Michigan shoppers.
But things started to change as Y2K approached. K-Mart started to struggle with its identity and failed strategies.
Strong competition from Walmart and Target along with on line shopping and K-Mart’s inability to grasp computer technology eventually led to the chain’s demise.
