COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A divided Coldwater Planning Commission approved a Special Use Permit for the operation of a proposed adult use recreational marijuana establishment at 55 South Michigan Avenue on a 4-3 vote Monday night.
Paul Schmitz of Bath, Michigan is the petitioner for the proposed operation. A single-family home and detached garage would be demolished under the current plans. A new building and parking lots would be constructed. Schmitz plans to have a building with “upscale features and fit the character of the Michigan Avenue corridor.”
But nearby residents and business owners have raised some concerns. Commission members Aaron Garn and Dave Rumsey said it was not harmonious with the surrounding area and would change the neighborhoods character.
Coldwater Mayor Tom Kramer and Planning Commission member Jeff Budd expressed concerns that a denial of the petition could result in court action.
Garn, Rumsey and Commission member Chris Stevens voted against the Special Use Permit. Yes votes were cast by Kramer, Budd, Michael Beckwith and Aloha Miller.
In other business, the Planning Commission approved a special land use permit request from Salah Allaw of Detroit for a proposed Adult Use Recreational Marijuana Grow Establishment at 211 West Garfield Road. The business will have no retail sales.
Why do Coldwater officials keep approving and encouraging more drugs into our community?? It’s an outrage!! I’m a pharmacist and know precisely how these drugs will destroy our residents!! I voted against this and you are encouraging more drugs?? We already have a big drug problem in Branch county!! You need to do your research. Most marijuana is contaminated with toxic chemicals. I will fight against this!!
