COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Board of Commissioners voted during their work session on Thursday to bring forward a request from the Sheriff’s Department to repair one of the department’s marine patrol boats after it was struck from behind in a downtown Coldwater crash on Labor Day.
According to a Coldwater Police Department report, the boat was being driven back to the station at the end of the shift. It was stopped in the northbound lane at the Four Corners stop light for at least 30 seconds when it was struck from behind.
The impact caused the boat to be pushed forward on the trailer. While the boat and trailer were damaged, the Sheriff’s vehicle was not.
Sheriff John Pollack said they don’t have a choice as they are down to three boats.
The boat is in the repair shop. The estimated cost to fix the damage is about $3,600. County Administrator Bud Norman said they will turn the bill over to their insurance company and should get a reimbursement for a portion of the repairs.
Formal action by the Commissioners on the boat repairs is scheduled to be taken next Tuesday afternoon.
Pollack said the new boat for the Marine Patrol is in and they will pick it up this weekend. The Commissioners approved a quote last winter of $45,800 from Gull Lake Marine of Richland.
