COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – On Homecoming night at Cardinal Field, Coldwater lost to Harper Creek 37-23 in a game that didn’t kick off until 9:38 p.m. due to a number of lightning delays that pushed the start time back by over 2½ hours.
After the Beavers got the scoring started on a long Will King touchdown run, the Cardinals employed a trick play to kickstart an offense that hadn’t scored the previous week: Aiden Marsden handed off to Cam Torres, he pitched the ball to Brock Thornton, and Thornton tossed a 65-yard strike to Hunter Munson. The score was tied 14-14 after the first quarter, and the Beavers took a 21-17 lead into the halftime break.
Harper Creek led 29-23 at the end of the third quarter, but the Cardinals’ attempt to tie the game in the fourth was quashed thanks to an apparent pass interference penalty that was waived off. Four plays later, Julion McCray scored on a 59-yard TD run to ice the game away.
Cam Torres had 34 carries for 160 yards and a touchdown, Cole Barker had two receptions for 24 yards and a score, and Aiden Marsden was 5/11 passing for 74 yards, a TD, and an interception. Zach Diotte led the defense with 7 tackles.
Coldwater dropped to 3-4 overall, 3-3 in the Interstate 8 with the loss. They will host Hastings next Thursday in the home finale. Harper Creek improved to 5-2 overall, and at 5-1 in the Interstate 8, they are tied with Hastings at the top of the league standings.
