COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution on Tuesday that seeks a disaster contingency fund grant from the State of Michigan.
The resolution states that Branch County sustained severe losses of major proportions brought on by the August 12 wind storm that resulted in damage to drain systems and to the department of public works pump system. The damage was caused by downed trees and extended power outages. The grant is also being sought to cover manpower overtime and emergency services mileage.
The resolution adds that “as a direct result of the disaster, public damage and expenditures were extraordinary and place an unreasonably great financial burden on Branch County totaling $58,924.69.”
Branch County Emergency Management Coordinator Tim Miner told the County 911 Communications Board on Wednesday that the state funds are available when federal dollars are not.
Counties, cities, villages and townships are eligible.
The Commissioners are requesting Governor Whitmer authorize a grant to Branch County from the State Disaster Contingency Fund pursuant to a 1976 state law.
