COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Branch County Jail will take place at 2:00 p.m. this Friday afternoon.
The ribbon cutting will come almost two years after ground was broken for the new jail which was built behind the current lockup.
Branch County Sheriff John Pollack told the Bronson City Council last Monday that everything is just about ready.
For the time being, operations continue in the old jail.
The construction of the new jail was made possible after a 20-year, 1.25 mill proposal was approved by Branch County voters in August 2018.
Two previous attempts to pass a new jail millage failed in 2006 and 2016.
Training will have to take place and some equipment will still have to be installed before the inmates can be moved into the new jail.
If everything works out, it is hoped that will take place sometime before Christmas.
Once the new jail becomes fully operational, the old jail will be shuttered and the process will begin for its demolition.
