UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – It’s taken ten years, but Union City picked up their first postseason football victory since former head coach Eric Tundevold’s final season in charge as the Chargers shut out Niles Brandywine 24-0 Friday night in an MHSAA Division 7 District Semifinal game at soggy Alumni Field.
The Chargers struck early, getting the ball in the red zone on their opening possession following a botched Bobcat punt attempt. Owen Jackson had a 15-yard score with 9:54 left in the opening quarter. Union City took advantage of a Brandywine turnover and struck again, thanks to a 10-yard Garrett Iobe TD run with 8:42 left in the first. Jackson scored again from 6 yards out with 8:04 left in the half, and strong defensive efforts by both teams, along with deteriorating field conditions, kept the score at 18-0 until late in the game, when Terrance Morgan Jr. scored from two yards out on a 4th-and-goal situation with 2:20 left.
Iobe led the team with 87 yards rushing on 21 carries, Morgan finished with 69 yards on 15 carries, and Jackson had 6 carries for 48 yards.
Brandywine ends its season at 4-6, while Union City improves to 6-4 and will travel to Lawton next week to play for a Division 7 District title. Lawton defeated Homer Friday night 52-6.
Prior to Friday night, Union City’s last postseason victory came on October 28, 2011 at Alumni Field, as the Chargers defeated Sand Creek 13-7 in a Division 7 District Semifinal game. It wound up being Eric Tundevold’s final coaching victory, as Union City lost the next week at Hudson 22-14.
