LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Add the State of Michigan to the list of states where critical race theory in public schools is being debated.
Republicans in the Michigan State House approved a plan on Tuesday that would ban the teaching of “racial stereotypes” on a 55-0 vote.
Democrats refused to cast their votes. The Detroit Free Press reports the minority Democrats did not vote because not every lawmaker who wanted to speak against the measure was allowed to do so.
Republican 58th District State Representative Andrew Fink of Hillsdale co-sponsored House Bill 5097.
Fink dismissed opposition to the legislation.
While the legislation does not mention CRT, it says teachers can not teach that one race is better, worse, or more problematic than another.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer is expected to veto the plan if it makes it to her desk.
