BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Police in Coldwater and Quincy are investigating a rash of vehicle break ins that were reported during the early morning hours of Tuesday.
Coldwater Deputy Police Chief Patrick Beeman says in a news release issued by the Department of Public Safety that thieves broke into six parked cars in the second ward shortly after midnight on Tuesday. It’s believed the thefts took place at around 1:30 a.m..
According to police, thieves targeted unlocked cars that were parked in driveways.
They made off with mostly loose cash and change, but two wallets were also stolen.
Quincy Police also reported that six cars were broken into in their jurisdiction at about 2:30 a.m. the same morning.
Two suspects in the Quincy thefts were described as being about five-feet-11 inches tall and athletic.
Beeman says the Quincy crimes were similar to Coldwater in that the thieves targeted unlocked vehicles parked in driveways. Of significant note is that two handguns were stolen from vehicles parked in Quincy.
Residents are being reminded once again by police that they can help prevent vehicle break ins by removing valuables from their cars and locking their doors when the vehicle is not in use.
Beeman says this is especially important with the holiday season approaching. Do not leave purses, packages or money in your car where they are visible.
It is a better practice to secure valuables out of sight in your trunk while shopping.
Anyone with information on the thefts is encouraged to contact the Quincy Police Department at (517) 639-9065 or the Coldwater Police Department at (517) 278-4525.
Officers from both departments may be contacted through central dispatch after business hours at (517) 278-3091.
