PARK TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – The driver of a vehicle was killed Monday afternoon in a St. Joseph County crash on southbound U.S. 131 between Heimbach and Moorepark Roads.
St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite says the crash happened at about 2:14 p.m. when a Chevrolet Tahoe lost control, went off the road, rolled over and struck several trees.
The 51-year-old male driver who lost his life was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Lillywhite says witnesses reported seeing the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and trying to pass or avoid hitting a combine when the vehicle lost control.
Deputies are awaiting the results of an autopsy but at this time alcohol is not believed to be a factor but the fatal victim was not wearing seat belts.
The drivers name is being withheld pending family notification.
