COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council approved three requests from Neighborhood Services Director and Assessor Deb Sikorski on Monday night regarding proposed amendments to fees while taking no action on a fourth request.
The fee for rental housing inspections, which are handled by Code Official Robert Hawley, would go up from $5 to $50 for a single unit.
Sikorski said the current inspection fee is not close to offsetting the costs of the inspections.
The Council also passed a resolution to amend Planning and Zoning fees. Sikorski said their fees were the lowest when compared to other local jurisdictions.
The Council voted to introduce an ordinance which amends the city’s building code inspection and enforcement fee schedule. With the retirement of Ken Fickle as a full-time employee, the City of Coldwater now has third-party contractors for building and related inspections. Sikorski said the proposed changes would more closely match the fees charged by the independent contractors for these inspections.
After a lengthy discussion and some hesitancy by Council members about proposed higher fees, Sikorski was asked to bring back some more options concerning a resolution authorizing fees associated with Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control. She said the current schedule of fees charged by the City does not cover the costs for Fickle’s inspection work and they have not been updated since 2010.
