COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Legal proceedings for a former Lakeland Correctional Facility prisoner who is facing two charges after he allegedly tried to escape from a prison transportation van parked at ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital on August 1 are on hold as he undergoes a forensic examination.
21-year-old Anton Duran Morgan was also accused of attempting to disarm a Michigan Department of Corrections officer as the two struggled during Morgan’s alleged attempt to escape.
It was announced during a probable cause hearing on Tuesday in Branch County District Court that Morgan was undergoing treatment for paranoid schizophrenia
A forensic exam will determine his competency for trial as well as criminal responsibility.
Since the incident at the hospital, Morgan was transferred to the Gus Harrison Correctional Facility in Adrian where he was being held on Berrien County convictions for breaking and entering, felony firearms and unarmed robbery.
His earliest release date is June of 2025.
