COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A bond reduction request for a Coldwater man who is facing a first degree criminal sexual conduct charge was denied on Tuesday by Branch County District Court Judge Brent Wiegle.
35-year-old Adan George Rodriguez was arrested following an investigation by Coldwater Police into an alleged incident involving an 11-year-old girl at a local residence on November 2.
A cash or surety bond of $200,000 was set by Judge Weigle during an arraignment for Rodriguez nearly three weeks ago. Defense attorney John Vincent said the defendant’s family was trying to raise money for the bond. He pointed out his client has not faced a criminal charge since 2006 and that he would obey any order to have no contact with the alleged victim.
But Vincent’s request for the court to entertain a personal recognizance bond or perhaps a 10 percent bond was denied by Weigle. The judge felt that given the nature of charge and the age of the alleged victim, lowering the bond would be an unacceptable risk to her and the public.
In order to give the defense more time to review everything in the case including a forensic interview, Weigle scheduled new dates of next Tuesday for the probable cause hearing and December 16 for the preliminary exam.
