COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The inmates may not be housed there yet but the new Branch County Jail has been put to use by the Sheriff’s Department since the October 22 ribbon cutting.
Tours of the jail have been conducted and several meetings have been held in the new training room including the November meeting of the Branch County Township Association. Sheriff John Pollack hosted the Michigan Sheriff’s Associations Fourth District Sheriff’s meeting at the new jail. In attendance were approximately 30 Sheriff’s from Southwest Michigan and beyond.
Training will have to take place and some equipment will still have to be installed before the inmates can be moved into the new jail.
If everything works out, it is hoped that will take place sometime around the first of the year.
The new jail was made possible after a 20-year, 1.25 mill proposal was approved by Branch County voters in August 2018.
Two previous attempts to pass a new jail millage failed in 2006 and 2016.
