COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Quincy area man admitted his guilt on Monday in Branch County Circuit Court to damaging a Michigan State Police vehicle during a drunk driving arrest.
29-year-old Richard Keith Barber entered guilty pleas to charges of malicious destruction of police or fire property and operating while intoxicated.
Prosecutors dropped a habitual offender sentencing enhancer in exchange for his guilty pleas.
According to Branch County court documents, the State Police put Barber into custody on July 3 after his vehicle crashed into a ditch on Adolph Road near Francisco Road in Union Township.
A trooper put Barber in handcuffs and placed him in the front seat of his patrol unit. Barber was then alleged by authorities to have kicked out the front windshield.
Court documents also state Barber was unable to complete field sobriety tests.
A sentencing hearing was scheduled for January 24.
