COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A big fourth period comeback for the Coldwater Cardinals fell short on Tuesday night as they were beaten by the Portage Central Mustangs 45-39 at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium on the opening night of the girls basketball season.
The Cardinals were down 36-24 midway through the fourth period when they scored 11 straight points. The run was capped by a three-point bucket by freshman Elli Anderson. But the Cardinals turned the ball over on their next four possessions and the Mustangs were able to take advantage of being in the double bonus and hung on for the win at the foul line. Portage Central was 10-of-15 at the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.
Freshman Elli Foley led the Cardinals with 15 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and a block, while Mallory Wilber added 9 points, 2 assists, and 3 steals. Anna DeMeester had a team-high 8 rebounds, while Brooklyn Kerry had 5 boards and 4 blocks. Macy Searles scored a game-high 16 points for the Mustangs.
