On Wednesday, December 29th, 2022, Elsie Lee Hawken, 90, of Coldwater passed away at Maple Lawn surrounded by her family. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Cecil (Marshall) Wilson and her sister Helen Lindsey. She is survived by her 5 children, Beverly (Russ) Johnson of Burlington, Michael (Cheryl) Rubner of Terrell, TX, Susan (Robert) Cline of Quincy, Randy (Ronnie) Harrison of Coldwater, and Kenny Harrison of Coldwater; her grandchildren Natalie Rutan of Coldwater, Nathan Rutan of Coldwater, Lee (Kelly) Kempton of MD, Summer Rutan of Coldwater, Aaron (Amber) Rubner of TX, Amber (Ryan) Alexander of TX, John (Amber) Rutan of Union City, Victoria (Dane Earl) Harrison of Coldwater, and Alesha Harrison of FL; 26 great grandchildren and 3 great – great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Elsie was born on June 19th, 1931 on the family farm in Litchfield, MI. She attended Litchfield schools and was active in 4H. Following graduation, she earned her Licensed Practical Nursing certificate in Battle Creek. She worked as an LPN in Albion, MI, and San Francisco, CA. She moved back to Michigan and worked for many years at the Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater. Following that she spent 30 years in the flooring industry, owning Hawken’s Flooring in Union City and Hillsdale. She then worked at Willowbrook Interiors in Coldwater from which she retired in 2019.
Elsie enjoyed playing in area pool leagues and was a member of the Coldwater Eagles. She attended the weekly dances at Burnside Senior Center and enjoyed being outdoors, gardening and growing flowers. She loved animals, especially chickens and cats
Visitation will take place at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater on Friday, January 14th, 2022 from 10- 11:00 AM, with the memorial service to begin at 11:00 AM. A private burial will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. Donations may be made to the Branch County Humane Society in Elsie’s honor.
