COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A request from Branch County Prosecutor Zach Stempien to continue the employment of a contract investigator through a Michigan State Police grant program was brought forward by the Branch County Board of Commissioners during their first work session of 2022 on Thursday morning.
The grant is valid through 2022. Stempien says his office has gotten an extension of the Michigan Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding grant which increases the amount from $25,000 to over $67,000.
He says the program has been very helpful.
Stempien says the grant would be used to pay a combination of investigator and intern. There would be no financial impact on the county since the positions are completely grant funded.
Stempien feels this will greatly assist his office in resolving the mass amount of pending cases caused in part by the delay in jury trials. Commissioners are scheduled to take formal action next Tuesday.
