ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – With tax season just around the corner, you should be aware of telephone scammers who are after your hard earned money.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office is reminding citizens to be aware of telephone scams involving claims that the IRS is calling or texting about a tax issue.
They point out the IRS does not contact tax payers by telephone for the purpose of collecting any income taxes.
They also don’t ask for or verify any personal or banking information by telephone and they do not process tax payments through gift cards.
The Sheriff’s Office says any unsolicited caller asking someone to put money on a gift card and then send the PIN code on the back of the card to settle any alleged monetary obligation is trying to scam you.
Just hang up and contact your nearest law enforcement agency.
