COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Downtown Historic Commission approved a request on Wednesday night by Broadway Grille owner Scott Ladd to restore the first-floor commercial front façade, replace the second floor windows and repaint or remove paint from the bricks at the historically contributing structure at 10 South Monroe.
The city acquired the former Lefty Lounge building from the State of Michigan through the property tax foreclosure process. As part of an economic development project agreement, the property was leased to Ladd in 2019 so that he could renovate it into a new bar and/or bar and restaurant with up to two apartments on the second floor.
The agreement allows Ladd to buy the building for its cost after its rehabilitation.
Consultant Bruce Johnston is working with Ladd on the project. He says they have to go by the Michigan Historic Preservation guidelines.
He added the windows will be operable.
Since the building is close to the Tibbits Opera House, plans call for the first floor restaurant to be called “The Opera” which pleased Commission Chair Randall Hazelbaker.
Johnston said more design work needs to be completed on the building which was constructed in 1902.
