COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Sheriff John Pollack told the Bronson City Council and other local government officials this week his department is still short six Corrections Officers.
A full Corrections staff would consist of 20 officers but Pollack said he has 14 available right now.
He feels fortunate the Sheriff Department operations have been relocated in recent weeks to the new $28 million Branch County Jail.
He feels there are a lot of factors as to why the department is struggling to fill open positions.
Some road patrol deputies have been used to fill the Correction Officer openings. Pollack said Corrections Officers worked nearly 595 hours of overtime last month and he didn’t see that backing off any time soon.
Pollack said 2021 was an extremely busy year for his department with nearly 14,000 complaints. That was the most the department has handled since 2014.
There were also 2,456 traffic stops, 203 property damage crashes and 57 crashes that involved injuries. Deputies also handled 314 car-deer crashes.
The Sheriff’s Department investigated 57 breaking and entering cases along with 90 cases for domestic assault and 128 larcenies. They also made 319 arrests.
