BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan State Police and the Branch County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the most recent phone scam to go through the area.
State Police say Branch County residents are receiving a call from a phone number that appears to be local and the caller claims to be a deputy with the Sheriff’s Department.
The caller then proceeds to say that you missed jury duty recently and that a warrant was issued for your arrest. The caller then says you now need to pay $1,800 to avoid going to jail.
Law enforcement authorities say this is a scam. The phone number is not legitimate and in no way is associated with the Sheriff’s Department or the Branch County Courthouse.
If you get such a call, do not pay any monies to anyone. Instead, write down the suspect phone number and any names the caller uses. These calls can be reported to the FBI’s website at www.ic3.gov.
If you have paid money to these suspects, contact the Branch County Sheriff’s Department or the Michigan State Police.
