COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater defeated Portage Northern 56-48 Monday night at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium in the first game of a challenging week week for the Cardinal boys basketball program.
Coldwater jumped out to a 17-9 first quarter lead and took a 27-15 advantage to the halftime break. The Huskies, led by former Western Michigan head coach Steve Hawkins, hung tough during the second half, outscoring the Cardinals 33-29. Coldwater head coach Aaron Bucklin said after the game:
Brandon Downs led Coldwater with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals. Donte Work had 10 points and 5 rebounds, Evan Sloan added 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks, and Lu Lebron had 8 points and 5 rebounds. Leading scorer Ethan Crabtree sustained an apparent knee injury early in the game and finished with 4 points.
Cane Mack led all scorers with 18 points for Portage Northern, who dropped to 1-13 overall.

The Cardinals, who received 2 votes in this week’s Associated Press Division 1 Boys Basketball Poll, will take an 11-1 record to their showdown at Warren De La Salle Collegiate Tuesday night. The Pilots, also an Honorable Mention in this week’s poll, come into the game with a 10-4 record playing in the toughest league in the state, the Catholic High School League’s Central Division. Coverage on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 WTVB will begin Tuesday night at around 6:45 p.m.
Coldwater lost both underclassman games against Portage Northern. The Huskies took the JV game 58-42 and won the freshman game 41-30. Kendall Austin led the freshman Cardinals with 11 points.
