COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Lady Cardinal gymnastics team celebrated their five seniors on Senior Night as they defeated Monroe 133.1 to 43.2 on Tuesday night in a meet that was rescheduled due to last week’s weather related cancellation.
The win improved the Cardinals conference record to 5-1.
The five seniors honored were Avery Boyce, Leah Goodwin, McKenna Hantz, Katie Kimble, and Layla Schoch.
Hantz was first in the vault with a score of 8.35. Boyce finished in second with her mark of 8.25. Kiraly Schoenauer was close behind with 8.2.
Coldwater dominated the uneven bars as they earned the top six scores led by Charlotte Calhoun. The sophomore introduced a new combination with a giant swing in her routine and posted her second best score of 8.65. Randi Dudek was second with her mark of 8.1. Boyce earned a third place finish.
The Cardinals had eight of the top nine scores on the balance beam. Calhoun introduced a new dismount for her routine and earned 9.1 points for first place. Close behind was sophomore Gabby Schoch who posted a personal best mark of 8.9. Sister Layla finished in third for her efforts, collecting 8.2 points.
The floor exercise was the final event for Coldwater, where they posted 34.2 points – their highest event points overall. The bird squad was led by Senior Leah Goodwin, who was making her debut and farewell on the event. The Cardinal has been sidelined this season due to an injury, but set a goal to compete in her final Cardinal home dual meet on the floor exercise. Goodwin posted 8.75 points for her routine and earned a first place finish. Kiraly Schoenauer earned a personal record for her floor routine with 8.65 points to finish in second place. The Schoch sisters were next in line with Layla finishing in third for her efforts at 8.475. Gabby collected 8.325 points for the fourth place finish.
For the all-around competition, senior Layla Schoch claimed the top honors with her four event tally of 32.25 points. Dudek was second with her score of 31.95 points. Hantz finished in third by posting 31.8 points. Senior Avery Boyce rounded out the top four spots with her score of 31.675 points.
There will be one more chance to watch the Coldwater gymnasts in their home gym this coming Saturday for their 12th annual Stick It For A Cure Cardinal Invitational. Coldwater will host 10 other teams from all over the state as they work towards raising donations for the local cancer center. The gymnasts have been very busy canvassing the community for donations, selling raffle tickets, and teaching gymnastics lessons to local youth, all in an effort to raise funds for the event.
The march in and opening ceremonies begin at 9:15 a.m. in the auxiliary gymnasium. The silent auction begins at 10:00 a.m. and will run until 2:00 p.m.. There are additional events planned that include a bake sale and the raffle of a Yeti cooler, Apple AirPods Pro, and a Kate Spade purse.
The public is invited to come and watch the gymnasts and take part in all of the fundraising activities. The competition should conclude around 4:30 p.m..
