COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals finished in seventh overall out of 19 teams on Saturday at the 12th annual Stick It For A Cure Gymnastics Invitational. There were over 135 gymnasts in attendance at the event, and over 100 individuals competing in two divisions of skill level. Coldwater was less than a half point out of fifth place against powerhouse schools from all over the state. Many of the schools fielded both an A and a B team to fill out the 19 squads of competition.
The Cardinals began the day on the vault. Charlotte Calhoun and Avery Boyce both went back to back on the event with 8.425 and 8.4 points respectively. Freshman Kiraly Schoenauer was next in line, posting 8.3 points. Layla Schoch and Randi Dudek tied for their efforts at 8.2 points each for fifth place in Division 1.
On the uneven bars, Calhoun led the team with 8.3 points for a sixth place tie in Division 2. Layla Schoch finished fifth for division one with her score of 7.85 points.
Coldwater moved to the balance beam for their third rotation where Calhoun finished in seventh overall with her score of 8.95 points.
The Cardinals competed on the floor exercise for their final event. Calhoun earned a personal record with her score of 9.25 points. Layla Schoch finished in third for Division 1 with her season best score of 8.925 points. Schoenauer also earned a personal best for her efforts, collecting 8.775 points.
In the all-around competition, Dudek and Layla Schoch went back to back for Division 1 claiming fourth and fifth place overall. Dudek collected 32.3 points, followed by Schoch with 32.0. Charlotte Calhoun tallied 34.925 points overall to finish in sixth place for Division 2.
Coldwater will compete on Wednesday at the South Central Gymnastics League conference championship at Saline High School. Going into the meet the Cardinals are in second place overall behind the Jackson powerhouse team.
