COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A public hearing on whether or not Branch County should pursue a state grant to help fund the purchase of 27 acres of land from Corn Island LLC was held during Thursday morning’s Branch County Board of Commissioners work session.
It was mentioned two weeks ago there is a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant program that would allow municipalities to purchase and or develop property.
There would be a 25 percent local match under terms of the grant. The land has been appraised at about $1.1 million. The land owners have offered to contribute the difference for the grant match.
Mixed opinions were expressed during the public hearing.
Bob Coats of Union City questioned why Branch County needs another park.
Josh Zuiderveen from South Peat Environmental of Rockford, who has worked with the county and the property owners, said the land could generate revenue for the county.
Commissioner Leonard Kolcz had mixed feelings about pursuing a grant.
Commissioner Randall Hazelbaker was in favor.
Commission Chair Tim Stoll had his doubts.
Commissioners voted 4-1 to bring action on a resolution to pursue the grant forward to next Tuesday’s meeting. Stoll cast the only no vote.
The deadline to file an application for a grant is April 1 and the county should find out sometime in December if it was approved.
