COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater held off a late charge to defeat Gull Lake 57-51 Wednesday night in an MHSAA Division 1 District Semifinal game at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium.
Evan Sloan scored 10 of his 18 points in the first quarter as Coldwater roared out to a 16-8 lead. They would grab an 11-point halftime lead, 27-16, and had a 41-28 advantage heading into the final quarter. Gull Lake mounted a furious comeback attempt in the fourth, outscoring the Cardinals 23-16, but the Blue Devils came up short as they finished the season at 13-9.
Brandon Downs led Coldwater with 20 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Near the end of the first half, he became the fifth Cardinal boys basketball player to reach the 1000-point career milestone.
Sloan finished with a double-double, adding 10 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal to his 18-point performance. Donte Work also had a double-double, with 12 points and 11 boards.
The Cardinals improved to 18-3 on the season and will host Kalamazoo Central Friday night at 7 p.m. for the District title. The Maroon Giants came from behind to beat Battle Creek Lakeview 49-45 in the early game.
