KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan State Police are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, March 20.
According to a press release from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, KDPS officers responded to the 1000 block of South Westnedge at approximately 10:19 a.m. to conduct an investigation into suspected criminal activity.
While on scene, the lone suspect, a 33-year-old Battle Creek resident, fired shots from a handgun at the officers. An officer then returned fire, striking the suspect, who was pronounced dead on the scene.
No officers were injured in the incident.
Traffic on South Westnedge in the Vine Street area was closed off to traffic for nearly six hours as police conducted their investigation.
As per KDPS protocol, the Michigan State Police were notified of the officer involved shooting and responded to the scene. The investigation is now being handled by the Michigan State Police.
