COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Even though the official filing deadline isn’t until later this month, it appears that the ballot for Branch County voters will be full of state and federal candidates this year.
In the newly named 35th State House District, which includes Branch and Hillsdale counties, as well as a portion of Jackson County, first term incumbent Andrew Fink has filed for reelection, as well as fellow Republican Steve Meckley of Cement City. No Democrat has filed yet.
In the new 17th State Senate District, which now covers Branch County and extends from Hillsdale County west to the lakeshore, current Senator Kim LaSata of Coloma has filed. Fellow Republicans Jonathan Lindsey of Bronson and Berrien County Commissioner Ezra Scott have also both announced they are running, but have yet to file with the Michigan Secretary of State’s office. No Democrat have yet filed.
In the new 5th Congressional District, Congressman Tim Walberg is expected to face a Republican primary challenge from Dr. Sherry O’Donnell, a physician from Stevensville and Bryan Trouten of St. Joseph County. None have filed their paperwork listed on the Secretary of State’s website yet.
The filing deadline for the August 2, 2022 primary is April 19 at 4:00 p.m.
